Demand-side platforms (DSPs) first emerged in the late 2000s when real-time bidding (RTB) started to take flight, with the first DSPs on the market being MediaMath and Rocket Fuel.

Nowadays, there are hundreds of demand-side platforms, offering advertisers and agencies access to all types of inventory (e.g. display, native, video, and in-app mobile) across different channels.

What Is a Demand-Side Platform (DSP) and How Do They Work?

A demand-side platform (DSP) is an advertising technology (AdTech) platform that allows media buyers (advertisers and agencies) to create and run advertising campaigns across thousands of publishers. 

DSPs are a key component of the real-time bidding (RTB) process, which allows advertisers and agencies to buy inventory from various ad exchanges and SSPs on an impression-by-impression basis through one user interface.

To help improve targeting and enhance media buys, DSPs often utilize data from data management platforms (DMPs).

What Are the Main Components of a Demand-Side Platforms?

While each DSP offers slightly different features and functionalities, there are a number of components that most DSPs would have:

We define a DSP as a platform that allows brands and agencies to buy inventory on an impression-by-impression basis on real-time bidding (RTB) auctions.
